Through our unique approach, artists come together to create new projects that push boundaries and challenge conventional notions of art. As part of our commitment to the development of the Bulgarian cultural sector, we also offer the 180° Community Lab, which provides training, mentorship, and networking opportunities to local artists and cultural professionals.

180° PROGRAM 2024

Festival topic: tacet

This year, the 180° – Laboratory for Innovative Art Festival is celebrating its 11th edition, taking place for the first time at the beginning of October. The event brings together international artists from various disciplines who explore their interpretations of this year’s theme: tacet. The festival encourages collaborations between creators from the fields of experimental music, contemporary dance, performance, visual arts, and literature, who will present diverse concepts from the world of art, viewed from a more unconventional angle.

A discussion with international participation on the topic “Cultural Partnerships: Pathways to Collaboration in the Cultural Sector”, part of the cultural and educational program Community Lab°. The discussion will explore the challenges and opportunities of collaboration in culture, with a focus on innovative approaches and sustainable partnerships.

Under the mentorship of director and curator Ksenia Ravvina, choreographer Kalina Georgieva, and musician Alexandar Hadjiev, high-school students will develop a concept over the course of two days, which will be presented at this event. Creativity Lab° is part of the Community Lab° program and involves the exchange of ideas, experimentation, and the integration of different art forms with the goal of creating an innovative creative piece.

Dimitar Gorchakov (Bulgaria) is a pianist and composer who skillfully weaves together various musical styles. Over the years, he has been involved in experimental and improvisational projects in the fields of music and theater across Europe, North, and South America. Dancer and choreographer Dmytro Grynov (Ukraine) combines diverse dance styles with striking immersive visuals. His work focuses on current issues such as social inclusion and climate change. Director and author Christoph Clausen (Germany) works in the field between installation art and opera for various theaters in Berlin. In 2021, he co-founded the independent musical theater ensemble VORTEX.

The work of flutist Delphine Roche (France) is like a time machine that brings together musical styles from different eras – from Renaissance to contemporary. Delphine creates interdisciplinary art in the fields of music, dance, circus, cinema, theater, and sound design. Martin Atanasov (Bulgaria) works in the fields of photography, drawing, and photobooks. He explores visual anthropology through photographic books and collages, focusing on public spaces and archiving. Performance artist and poetess Jacqueline Weihe (Germany) develops and organizes experimental events that examine social behavior and our daily habits. In her work, she seeks an unusual context to trace and present lived experiences.

Viktoria Draganova (Bulgaria) is a curator and researcher focused on interdisciplinary projects. Her work examines the role of independent initiatives in the artistic ecosystem. Experimental musician Marie Delprat (Switzerland) develops hybrid projects inspired by styles such as ambient, electro-dance, and techno. She is interested in the interconnections between sound, movement, and visual arts. Digital artist Tom Lane (UK/Germany) explores the intersections between performance, film, and digital media, examining the interactions between the real and digital worlds.

Art students from Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria will come together during the 180° Festival in Sofia to collaborate and create an artistic experiment at the Swimming Pool venue. They will present the results of their joint work, inspired by this year’s festival theme: tacet. The lab is mentored by director Ksenia Ravvina. The project is realized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Bulgaria, the Italian Cultural Institute, and KoreoProject, Italy.

The official closing of the festival and the final of the Videomotion 2024 short silent film competition, aimed at both professionals and amateurs. This year’s theme is tacet, and the selected finalists will be accompanied by live improvised music performed by the musicians of 180°.

For 2024 our so-called #180°festivalhub for the festival community will be The Travellers Club Sofia. This will be the physical space where participants and visitors could crash for directions and all kind of information about the festival, for a small talk or networking or just for a quick recharge. All our merch will be also available here. Everybody is welcome, with or without a plan or direction.

COMMUNITY LAB°

In 2024, Community Lab° offers workshops and labs, as well as a discussion bringing together cultural managers and international artists. The Creativity Lab, aimed at high school students, focuses on the creation and implementation of interdisciplinary original concepts. The Improvisation Lab, also designed for high-school students, explores abstract sounds and spontaneous art creation. The Student Lab brings together students from Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria in artistic collaborations, while Critic Lab develops creative writing skills among students and young professionals. The international discussion focuses on innovative and sustainable cultural partnerships.
